Douglas Ainslie:  “Would it help if I apologized again?”

The Ainslie’s regarding his pending venture into the city:  “You want to come with me?”

The doctor regarding Muriel’s surgery:  “How does it feel?”

-Muriel:  “They must’ve got lucky.”

-Dr.:  “It’s strange…the more operations they do, the luckier they get.”

Graham:  “Why won’t you go out Mrs. Ainslie?  There’s all life here.  There’s so much to see.”

Sonny:  “I have a dream to outsource old age.  There are lots of places besides Britain that don’t like the old age, too.”

Sonny and his girlfriend, Sunaina:  “Do you love me, Sonny?

Medical staff to Muriel regarding a lower-caste cleaning girl:  “She wants to thank you for your kindness.

-Muriel:  “I haven’t been kind.”

-Medical staff:  “You are the only one who acknowledges her.”

Evelyn:  “One wants to trust in general, but you never really know.”

Regarding what was striking and appealing about India:  “The way people see life as a privilege and not as a right.”

Jean Ainslie to Douglas Ainslie:  “Yes, well, when I want your opinion, I’ll give it to you.”

Evelyn about another couple’s relationship:  “They had no secrets from each other.  None.  That’s right, isn’t it?  That’s right.  Makes me realize how much I wronged Hugh.”

Sonny:  “This is a disaster! Then we must treat it exactly like a triumph.  The only problem is I have never known a triumph—only disaster.”

Graham:  “All that time I thought I’d sentenced him to a life of shame, but I was the one in prison.”

Sonny and his mom:  “Come back with me to Delhi, your life will be so much better, so much easier.”

-Sonny:  “Not easier, mommy G… smaller.”

Madge:  “Single by choice—just not my choice.”

Sonny:  “It’s because I love her that I cannot say it.  She could do so much better than me.”

“You see things as they are, and not as you wish them to be.”

Sonny to his Sunaina:  “No more will I believe that I am not worthy, but only by loving you will I become so.”

Douglas Ainslie:  “Funny, they call this rush hour and yet nothing actually moves.”

Sonny:  “Nothing happens unless first we dream.”

Sonny’s mom:  “I may not have a right to judge, but I have a mother’s right to worry.”

Muriel:  “We haven’t talked much, you and I.”

-Evelyn:  “My loss, apparently.”

Muriel to Sonny:  “If I can stand o my own two feet, I’m sure you can too.”

“Things haven’t quite worked out as I’d planned.”

-“Most things never do, but then, that’s usually the good stuff.”

Evelyn: “The only real failure is the failure to try.  And the only real success is to cope with disappointment as we must.”

Evelyn:  “Can we be blamed for feeling we are too old to change?  Too scared of disappointment to start again?”

Evelyn:  “It’s also true that the person who wishes nothing, does nothing, has nothing.”

Evelyn:  “Perhaps what we fear is that it will be the same, so we must celebrate the changes.”

Evelyn:  “Everything will be alright in the end, so, if it’s not alright, trust me, it’s not the end.”
